Forgotten Masters III
Online catalogue Winter 2023/24
London Art Week
Continuing with the theme of “forgotten masters”, Dominic Fine Art’s latest catalogue features a fascinating still life by the short-lived impressionist Auguste Lauzet (1863-1898) as well original research into his relationship with Vincent van Gogh.
It also includes a large marble by Camille Alaphilippe (1874-1940), among the most promising sculptors of his generation, whose career came up against the simultaneous challenges of inflation and the First World War. A rediscovered drawing from the Everest expedition of 1924, depicts the sherpa “Dorjay Pasang” described as “Mallory and Bruce’s leading porter, their first pick and one of the men on whom our highest hopes centred.” With the 100 year anniversary approaching, the catalogue focuses on the growing reliance on local guides (like Pasang) that would lead to the successful partnership of Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953.
